GRADE 7. INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY.
Matter and its states. Types of matter: elements, compounds, mixtures. Atoms and electrons. Ions and ionic compounds. Covalent bonding. Formulas. Periodic table. Moles and chemical calculations.

GRADE 8. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Chemical reactions. Stoichiometry. Gases. Water and solutions. Systematic chemistry of elements and their compounds.

GRADE 9. ADVANCED INORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Acids, bases, salts. Reaction rates. Equilibria. Thermochemistry. Electrochemistry. Nuclear chemistry. Environmental chemistry. Continuation of systematic chemistry.

GRADE 10. ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
Hyrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, aromatic, etc.). Alcohols and related compounds. Aldehydes and ketones. Organic acids. Amines and amides. Heterocyclic compounds. Polymer chemistry.

GRADE 11. ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY.
Plans are tentative only. In addition to Advanced Placement review, other topics may include: Analytical chemistry / environmental chemistry. Advanced atomic chemistry, coordination chemistry, electrochemistry. Ceramics and other materials. Advanced testing of materials (x-ray diffraction, NMR, etc.).

GRADE 12. BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY.
Carbohydrates. Lipids. Amino acids and proteins. Biologically active amines. Nucleic acids. Metabolism of carbohydrates (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport). Photosynthesis. Lipid metabolism. Breakdown and biosynthesis of amino acids and proteins. Metabolism of nucleic acids.



NOTES ON LABORATORY EXERCISES:

Chemistry and Biology will have double periods scheduled once a week to permit two-period labs in each subject, as needed.
