Senator James B. Eldridge, D-Acton, and other local state representatives visited the Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA) Charter School on Friday January 22, 2010 for the school’s first ever “Breakfast with the Board”. The Breakfast was organized to facilitate a “meet and greet” between local companies that have given generously to the school, AMSA’s Board of Trustee members and local politicians. Attendees got the chance to ask questions about charter schools and the recent education reform bill during a Q&A with Senator Eldridge and State Reps. Harold Naughton, D-Clinton; George Peterson, R-Grafton; Kate Hogan, D-Stow; and Danielle Gregoire, D-Marlborough.
The Q&A session was a wonderful opportunity for the state legislators, AMSA personnel and corporate partners to have a dialog about the current funding formula for charter schools and ways to spread the word about the successes the school has had thus far. "This is really one of the most important forums we've had since we opened our doors," said Barbara McGann, the school's executive director.
In addition to the Q&A, Barbara McGann, AMSA Executive Director, and a student group took Senator Eldridge on a tour of the school. The Senator was very impressed with the school’s extensive offerings, including AP courses, math, science, humanities, art, foreign languages and computer science. During the Senator’s tour, middle school students spontaneously crowded around him asking for autographs on anything they had handy, including their books and security badges. All AMSA students have been kept up to date on the latest education legislation and when they knew the Senator was visiting the school they took the opportunity to show him how important he was to them.
