6th graders in Ms. Lowenthal's and Ms. Deshpande’s math classes created Integer Timeline Project posters based on zero as the year of their birth. They displayed five pre-birth and five post-birth events by aligning ‘0’ with their own birth year on a line. They illustrated timeline events by drawing pictures or gluing real pictures and stickers in a creative way.
The project was a great tool for each student to research social, historical and political events from before and after their birth, and to understand how this timeline relates to the number line with ‘0’ in the middle and negative integers on left and positive integers on the right.
The students shared their project timeline with their peers in a small group setting in the classroom.
