Hilda Solis nació en San Gabriel Valley, California en 1957 de padres inmigrantes de México y Nicaragua. Ella se graduó de la Universidad California State Polytechnic con título en Ciencias Políticas. Ella trabajó en la administración del presidente Jimmy Carter en la oficina de asuntos hispánicos. Después ella volvió a la universidad y ganó su maestría en administración pública de UCLA.
En 1992 Hilda fue electa al senado de california donde se enfocó en derechos de trabajadores y luchó para levantar el salario mínimo en el estado. En el año 2000, Hilda fue la primera mujer en ganar el premio de John F Kennedy profile in Courage. En el mismo año fue electa a la Cámara de Representantes. En 2008, el presidente Obama la nombró como la encargada del departamento de trabajo. Hilda fue la primera mujer Hispana a servir en el gabinete ministerial.

Hilda Solis was born in San Gabriel Valley, California in 1957 to immigrant parents from Mexico and Nicaragua. She graduated from California State Polytechnic University with a degree in Political Science. She worked in President Jimmy Carter’s administration in the Office of Hispanic Affairs. She then returned to college and earned her master's degree in Public Administration at UCLA.
In 1992 Hilda was elected to the California Senate where she focused on workers' rights and fought to raise the minimum wage in the state. In 2000, Hilda was the first woman to win the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award. In the same year she was elected to the House of Representatives. In 2008, President Obama nominated her to serve as head of the Department of Labor. Hilda was the first Hispanic woman to serve in the cabinet.
